REQUIREMENTS

Indian law requires that parents (couples) be married at least two years prior to application. Single women are accepted. Parents are to be over the age of twenty-seven years to forty years to be likely referred infants, or children below a year and a half. Forty to fifty-four years would be referred toddlers and older children. Indian law restricts families with children in the home prior to the adoption, but there are always exceptions to work with.

CHILDREN

There are mostly female children aged between 6 months – 5 years offered for adoption. Boys are available as well, but the wait for referrals will be longer since boys are usually locally adopted. All children are abandoned or relinquished after birth and reside in the licensed orphanages. Children are generally healthy. Boys, older children and children with special needs are available upon request.

TIME FRAME

Approximately eight to eleven weeks after the dossier is sent to India to get a referral. A referral contains a photo, child history, and medical report. Once you accept it, and the papers are filed in court, the court process will be anywhere between six to nine months to receive a guardianship. The child will arrive under Guardianship Act, you are expected to finalize the adoption in the US within two years upon arrival.

TRAVEL

It is not necessary to travel to India to pick up your child. IFI has trained staff to escort children. If you do choose to travel, please inform IFI of this decision in advance.
